The summer I registered Matthew for kindergarten, I began to hear a lot about accommodations and 504 Plans for the first time. Some of our friends, who had older school-aged children, asked if we had looked into setting one up. Honestly, I had no idea what they were talking about, why we would need a special plan, or if my son even qualified. I wondered:

What is a 504 Plan?

The name comes from Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, a federal civil rights law that stops schools from discriminating against students with disabilities.

Why Do Children with Food Allergies Qualify?

Because of this, many children with food allergies may qualify for accommodations under Section 504. Every child is evaluated individually, so eligibility depends on how the allergy affects that child’s daily life and safety at school.
