When Matthew was getting ready for kindergarten, I kept hearing parents mention “504 Plans.” I nodded along, but I honestly had no idea what they were or whether my son even qualified for one. I wondered:

The good news is that once you understand what a 504 Plan is, and what it isn’t, it becomes much less intimidating. In this guide, I’ll explain what a 504 Plan is, why many children with food allergies qualify, and how it can help create a safer school experience.
What is a 504 Plan?
A 504 Plan is a written document that outlines the accommodations a school will provide to help a student with a disability safely participate in school and have equal access to their education.
The name comes from Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, a federal civil rights law that protects individuals with disabilities from discrimination.
For children with food allergies, a 504 Plan doesn’t lower academic expectations or provide special treatment. Instead, it documents the accommodations that help keep a child safe while allowing them to fully participate in school.
In simple terms: think of a 504 Plan as a roadmap that helps everyone understand their role in protecting your child throughout the school day. A 504 Plan puts your child’s safety accommodations in writing so everyone is working from the same plan.
Why Do Food Allergies Qualify?
Food allergies can substantially limit one or more major life activities. Eating is considered a major life activity, and breathing, digestion, and other bodily functions can also be affected during an allergic reaction. Because of this, many children with food allergies may qualify for accommodations under Section 504. Every child is evaluated individually, so eligibility depends on how the allergy affects that child’s daily life and safety at school.
